LAY PASTORAL MINISTRY

A lay chaplain commissioning service was held April 29th at Nacogdoches Medical Center for the Community of Hope and included members from St. Cyprian's and Christ Church. Commissioning was by the Rev. Bob Wells, director of COH for the Diocese, based at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. Our own Rev. Doug Tucker attended to celebrate with newly commissioned Ashley Cook and Cathy Blanks, commissioned earlier but who has recently finished updating her training. Ashley and Cathy completed a week training program and a three month internship, learning about pastoral care in many areas, including the elderly, hospitalized and end of life.

The Community of Hope is an ecumenical chaplain corps founded through the Diocese of Texas whose mission is to create and sustain Christian communities of volunteer lay chaplains united in prayer, shaped by Benedictine spirituality and equipped for serving in pastoral care ministries. Benedictine Spirituality is a way of life that helps a person seek God and His will daily. It encourages balance in a life of corporate worship, spiritual reading and work in the context of community.

Pastoral care is when a person is present in a listening, compassionate, non-controlling manner for individuals and families, seeking to respond to spiritual needs. COH Chaplains serve in areas including parish pastoral care, nursing homes, hospitals and prisons.

The COH Center at St. Cyprian's in Lufkin is already in formation. We welcome people from other denominations in the community who will serve in their own areas of pastoral care. We have one chaplain serving in a prison in Diboll and one in North Lufkin. Ashley and Cathy are available for St. Cyprian's parish visits. If you need a chaplain or know someone who needs pastoral care, call the church office at 639-1253. If no answer or for emergencies call: Ashley at 238-9409 or 634-4307, or Cathy at 639-1369 or 675-4926.

Training classes are offered one to two times a year at a church in the region. For information on the application process e-mail Ashley at lscook@consolidated.net

The ministry of COH has grown and is in use across the U.S. and in other countries. In the Diocese of Texas it is sponsored by the Diocese, St. Luke's Episcopal Health System and Health Charities.

ALL RECEIPTS for items purchased for or charged to the church must be signed, marked as to purpose and turned into the church office or placed in the box outside the office marked "Marsha Miller".

CLARION DEADLINE IS MAY 19.
